Introduction
The main function of this lab is to probe the specific surface area and determine the adsorption/desorption isotherms of solid materials. The lab has instruments including (1) PCTPro high-temperature and high-pressure gas adsorption analyzer (Setaram), (2) AutoSorb-iQ gas adsorption analyzer (Quantachrome), and (3) ethylene glycol monoethyl ether (EGME) adsorption apparatus.
The PCTPro can determine the adsorption/desorption isotherms of solid materials at different temperatures (T) and pressures (P). The adsorbates include CH4, CO2, or mixed gas. The measure ranges of pressure and temperature are 0~200 bar and 0~500 °C, respectively. Sample with mass ranged from mg to kg can be measured. The adsorption/desorption isotherms can be accomplished under constant P, △P, and f(△P). This instrument is mainly employed in studies of shale gas, methane gas, and CO2 sequestration. The AutoSorb-iQ is mainly used for nitrogen (N2) adsorption to measure the adsorption/desorption isotherms, specific surface area, average pore diameter, pore volume, pore size distribution of solid materials. Measurement limit: specific surface area, lower limit 0.0005 m2/g, no upper limit; pore size range, 0.35~500 nm; P/Po range, <1*10-7~0.99. The EGME adsorption apparatus is chiefly used to determine the total surface area of solid materials. The analytical error is less than 5%. Internal surface area of solid materials can be measured with assistance of external surface area measured by N2 adsorption.
