Introduction
The Marine Chemistry Laboratory is located at Lingang campus of Tongji University (No.303, Haiyang 7th Road, Lingang New Are, Shanghai). The main function of the Lab is to investigate the chemical properties and geochemical processes of the ocean by sample pretreatment and instrumental analysis. The Lab has a collection of high-spec, state-of-the-art facilities open to external researchers and industry as listed below:
1. XRF
The M4 Tornado micro-XRF is an energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer designed for the measurement of a wide range of samples with high resolution and fast speed. It uses a 30 mm2 silicon-drift detector(energy resolution < 140 eV for Mn-K)to identify elements with an atomic number≥11 (Na and heavier), making it well-suited for geological material testing. The M4 Tornado can analyze and map flat or rough surfaces up to 200 x 160 mm, eliminating the need for sample preparation such as thin sectioning. Micro-XRF spectroscopy is rapid, non-destructive, and adaptable to many different types of materials, it could prove to be a useful tool for characterizing and classifying geology.
2. HPLC
Waters Alliance e2695 HPLC can be used for the monitoring of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, the measurement of hormones and the analysis of sulfides, thiosulfates, polysulfides and other inorganic substances.
3. TOC/TN
Multi N/C 3100 TOC/TN supports the determination of total organic carbon and total nitrogen in liquid or solid samples.
4. AAS
PinAAcle 900T AAS enables the analysis of trace elements such as iron, manganese, copper, lead, zinc, and chromium in water bodies, particulate matter or sediments. It can be widely used in chemistry research and education.
5. Inverted Fluorescence Microscope
Leica DMI 4000B is ideal for scanning cell and tissue cultures. The system features a fluorescence axis for ultra-brilliant fluorescence imaging. It could provide in situ fluorescence measurement of organic substances, fluorescence in situ hybridization of molecular organisms, fluorescence observation of living cells, as well as fluorescence microscopy of organic or inorganic substances.
6. Digital Microscope
Leica DM 6M can be used to observe any material up to 1000 times magnification with full-field transmission X-ray imaging. Also, it can realize microscopic observation and photography, as well as automatic splicing of micrographs.
7. High Efficiency Centrifuge
Beckman Avanti J-26 XP Centrifuge enables efficient and rapid separation of samples such as DNA isolation.
