Two pavilions of popular science base of deep sea science——“Deepsea Science Pavilion” and “Deepsea Exploration Pavilion”——accepted totally about 37800 people for visit and study in 2019, including 22288 people of 481 groups and 22 main popular science activities. In March, the Popular Science Education Base of Deepsea Science was selected into the“National Ocean Science Education Base, Chinese Society for Oceanography”. In November, Tongji university deep sea science and education base was formally renamed as “Tongji University Deep Sea Science Base”. In the same month, “Deepsea Exploration Pavilion” became one of the first batch of popular science exhibition units of the “Panoramic Digital Venue” plan of Yangpu district, Shanghai.

April 27th, the award ceremony and popular science report of the ninth “Low Carbon Cup” Shanghai earth science knowledge contest for middle school students was held in Tongji University. Prof.Huaiyang Zhou gave a unique popular science lecture, “Split wind and chop waves to explore sea”, for the students and teachers presented, and introduced the recently finished international cooperative scientific research expedition in Southwest Indian Ocean.
A successful live video connection to IODP 382 voyage and IODP 383 voyage
May 13th, worked with IODP China Office, the lab held a popular science live course from the remote South Pole. Through video connection, scientists on IODP 382 voyage on “Resolution” ship of America talked about the expedition life and scientific meaning of ocean drilling in the South Pole. A laboratory assistant professor Wenshen Xiao presided this live science course and answered the questions of students. June 15th, over 100 students from Affiliated high schooland primary school of Fudan University took part in a popular science interaction entitled“See the South Pole from another angle” in the form of live video connection with the Chinese scientists on IODP 383 voyage remote in the South Pole in Affiliated high school of Fudan University.

On the afternoon of Nov 29th, Academician Pingxian Wang went to Affiliated middle school of Shanghai Jiao Tong University for a report, “Exploring secrets of the deep sea”. He vividly introduced the process of human’s exploration into deep seas to the middle school students in four parts: human beginning to enter into deep sea, exploration of the world of deep-sea life, from deep sea into the deep earth, and marching into ocean to build a marine powerful nation.
《All in the same boat, one dream about the South China Sea》 made it a debut at the Shanghai book fair
Aug 14th,《All in the same boat, one dream about the South China Sea》, edited by IODP China Office and published by Shanghai science education press, made it a debut at the Shanghai book fair. The book made voyage diaries of Chinese scientists on three voyages of IODP349/367/368 and marine geological popular science tips presented to the general readers in vivid languages. Kepushibao also published the latest book report. Teacher Haiyan Jin in the lab gave a popular science lecture entitled “Scientists bring you down the South China Sea” at the book fair with popular responses.
Four “STEM innovative experimental courses” were held in Tongji primary school
During October to December, Prof. Shouye Yang, Prof.Daidu Fan, Prof. Rufu Qin and Teacher Fuwu Ji came to Tongji primary school respectively to give a STEM innovative experimental course to students. From “The past and present life of the Yangtze River estuary” to “Walking into the seafloor hydrothermal system”,they brought excellent popular science reports to primary students.
