On September 16, 2026, at the invitation of Professor YANG Shouye, Professor Stefano Albanese and Dr. Salvatore Dominech from the University of Naples Federico II, Italy, visited the State Key Laboratory of Marine Geology, Tongji University and conducted academic exchange.
Professor Stefano Albanese is an internationally renowned expert in applied geochemistry. He has long focused on geochemical mapping and environmental geochemistry, has participated in several major continental-scale geochemical mapping programs in Europe, and has long served as editor-in-chief or associate editor of multiple international academic journals. Dr. Salvatore Dominech is an outstanding alumnus of our school. He is mainly engaged in environmental geochemistry and marine geochemistry, focusing on geochemical data analysis and environmental pollution source tracing, and has published multiple related academic papers.
During the visit, Professor Stefano Albanese delivered an academic lecture titled “The Italian Experience in the Global Baseline Mapping Framework and the Development of an Integrated Geochemical Database for Campania.” The lecture systematically introduced the two major continental-scale geochemical mapping programs in Europe, FOREGS and GEMAS, and also presented the construction framework and core objectives of Italy’s regional environmental monitoring program “Campania Trasparente.”

Dr. Salvatore Dominech delivered an academic lecture titled “From Univariate to Geostatistics: Statistical Evolution in Geochemistry Through Real-World Case Studies.” Combining field cases, the presentation systematically reviewed the development trajectory of geochemical data analysis methods and described in detail the technological evolution and applications from basic univariate statistics, multivariate statistics, and compositional data analysis to spatial statistics and three-dimensional geochemical modeling.

The two lectures were cutting-edge and rich in content, combining methodological introductions with practical case analyses. After the lectures, faculty and students held in-depth exchanges with the two experts on key issues such as sampling methods for geochemical mapping, geochemical data processing, and spatial modeling. This academic visit strengthened cooperation between the two parties in environmental geochemistry and spatial analysis of geochemical data, and continued to promote the internationalization and high-quality development of related research directions in the State Key Laboratory of Marine Geology, Tongji University.
