Visiting Fellowship Program

The Visiting Fellowship Program supports visiting scholars from home and abroad to conduct collaborative researches. The fellowship supports researches focusing on fundamental deep-sea studies that aim at understanding the interactions of Earth’s spheres, i.e. the basic concept of Earth System Science. Research objectives shall be conformable to main research areas of MGLab, including Paleoceanography and Paleoenvironment changes, Continental Margin Evolution and Marine Sedimentology, Marine Geophysics and Lithosphere Evolution, Marine Biogeochemistry, Seafloor Process and Observation, Deep Sea Oil and Gas Exploration Technology, Ocean Big Data, and cross-disciplinary studies are also encouraged.

The program includes three types for application:

a. Distinguished Visiting Fellowship

b. Senior Visiting Fellowship

c. Young Scientist Visiting Fellowship

Besides travel expenses, accommodations (1-3 months) and living allowance, the Laboratory will also provide visiting scholars with office space and other Laboratory facilities.

Ocean Fest

The Ocean Fest Program invites scholars from home and abroad for short visits or online exchanges on specific topics to strengthen cross-disciplinary and international cooperation. Since its establishment, 39 workshops have been held with topics such as ocean drilling, the South China Sea, seafloor observatory, lectures by distinguished scholars and insights from new talents. The lab supports academic exchange expenses.

State Key Laboratory of Marine Geology (Tongji University)

The State Key Laboratory of Marine Geology (Tongji University, MGLab) was formally approved for construction in 2005 and is one of the first state key laboratories in marine science in China. Under the guidance of earth system science, the MGLab focuses on two long-term academic objectives: (1) Low-latitude forcing of climate evolution; (2) Geological evolution of the Western Pacific marginal seas. The vision of the Laboratory is to maintain unparalleled depth and breadth of expertise in marine geoscience across a range of cross-disciplinary research area, including paleoceanography and paleoenvironment, marine sedimentology, marine biogeochemistry, oil and gas resources exploration and geophysics, and oceanic lithosphere evolution. The Laboratory is the organizer and main research unit of the “South China Sea Deep (2011-2019, total budget: ~$31 million)”, the largest major research program funded by NSFC; leader of National Long-term Seabed Observatory System, the China’s only major scientific and technological infrastructure of the submarine research, specifically responsible for the seabed observation subnets for the East China Sea, the Monitoring and Data Center; active participant in the International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) and base for the IODP-China office to support Chinese scientists’ participation in ocean drilling expedition.

In recent years, the laboratory has promoted the application of “Three Deeps” technology: deep drilling, deep observatory and deep dive in marine science through the integration of science, technology and engineering. The mission of MGLab is to meet the national and international needs to address adaptation and resilience to climate change, and the major demand for seabed resource exploration. MGLab is dedicated to increasing its international influence on and competitiveness in deep-sea science and technology.
